Home-Reading Initiative & End of Week Message - 11 Feb

It is so nice to be writing this end of week note while looking at a sunny school yard.

Thanks to all who have been reading these posts and waiting at the edge of the school grounds at pickup and drop-off times where possible, and for exhibiting extra care when driving in our parking lots (or parking across the road and walking over).

We wanted to share about a home-reading initiative that we are starting here at Keating next week.  We have set the goal of reading for a total of 15 000 nights as a school community.  We will start counting nights of reading on Valentine’s Day.  Each teacher will have a different means of tracking this information, so please watch for info from your child(ren)’s teacher early next week if you are not sure what their method is.

We have an incentive of an extra recess for everyone when we reach our goal, but we will also have a couple of other perks along the way.  At 5000 nights, each child will receive a pair of vinyl mini-stickers featuring the new school logos.  At 10 000 nights we will have Robert Munsch-wild-hair-day.  There is also a secret bonus incentive that school liaison officer, Constable Gentile has offered at the conclusion of the initiative.  We expect that this will be a fun way to inspire a focus on nightly reading and give us something to work together on as a community.

A few considerations:

  • If your child is reading at home for any purpose, that counts towards this full-school initiative.  They don’t need to be doing extra reading specific to this program.  They can “double dip.”
  • Depending on your child’s age or reading ability, you might read to them, or you may read together, or they might read on their own.
  • Classroom teachers may provide more information specific to your child’s class next week.

A huge thank you to Amanda Carlson for her work in bringing this initiative to the school.

Have a great weekend in the sunshine!
