May News
Two months to go! Our Spring weather continues to be very unpredictable. Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately each day. This includes having a rain coat and maybe an extra pair of socks in addition to their spare set of clothes that are kept at school.
May is a busy month, with a lot happening at school and home. The children have now spent 8 months together, and now is the time of the year where some social issues usually arise. (They are kind of like siblings that have spent too much time together- some of them start to get on each other's nerves!!) I know that it's difficult with the sun setting later and with evening baseball practices, but getting a good night sleep will hopefully help the children cope and to be more tolerant with each other.
Themes
During the month of May, we will be learning about plants and things that grow. We are learning about some local native plants, and their traditional uses by the WSANEC people. We are also working a unit on Force and Motion as part of our Science curriculum, and will look at the effects of pushing, pulling, inclines, and friction when it comes to moving objects.
As part of our language arts curriculum, we will be reading a variety of fairy tales in French this month. We have also been working a lot on letter sounds since Spring Break. The children continue to work on using their "best guess writing" (using invented spelling to write the sounds they hear) to write words and sentences in their journals. I will continue to post samples of their work to Freshgrade, so if you haven't had a look at them, please do! The children are very proud of their writing!
In math, we will be completing our unit on measurement, and are continuing to learn about ways to partition and create numbers (ex. 10 can be made by adding 7 +3, 9+1, 10+0, etc.). Subitizing (identifying how many objects are in a set without counting) is also an ongoing topic.
Dramatic Play Centre
Our dramatic play centre will be transformed into a castle this month.
Show and Tell
For the month of May, the show and tell theme is "things that rhyme". Choose 2 things that rhyme- the words can be in English! (ex. a sock and a rock, a box and a fox, a house and a mouse, a potato and a tomato, etc.) The child will show us one of the things. We will identify it, and see if we can guess what the second object is.
