November News for Division 9

Themes

November will be another busy month. We will be talking about Remembrance Day, poppies (les coquelicots) and will attend a virtual Remembrance Day assembly on Wednesday, November 10th. Over the following weeks, we will be discussing "La Nuit" or night. We will be learning about nocturnal animals, specifically owls. We will produce a variety of art and craft projects based on the above mentioned themes to continue to improve the children's fine motor skill development. We are specifically focusing on cutting with accuracy, and drawing and colouring with detail and precision.

In Math, we will continue to work on counting using one-to-one correspondence, recognizing and creating sets of numbers to ten, and making patterns. We will continue to do daily literacy activities, as well as weekly literacy centers, to help the children identify letters and their sounds in French, match upper and lower case letters, and recognize their own names and their peer's names. We are working on printing using proper letter formation. I follow the printing program put out by our Occupational Therapists. (This program groups letters together based on similar formation, rather than starting at A and working our way to Z.) The first set of letters we are working on printing correctly is called the "Crazy C Family". It includes all the letters that are formed from the letter C: c, o, a, d, g, and q. Please feel free to practice these with your child!

50th Day of School

On Wednesday, November 24th, we will have been at school for 50 days! We will be counting (a lot!) to 50 by ones and tens. Please send in a collection of 50 small items for your child to count. (ex. Cheerios, dried beans/macaroni, rainbow loom elastics, flat stones, etc.)  The children will be placing the items on a grid with 50 squares. It is helpful (and easier for your child to count!) if the items you send in can sit flat on the paper, and not roll. We will also tie in our Social Studies concept of looking at how things have changed over time by comparing things (such as cars, clothes, technology, etc.) from the 1950s to now.

Pajama Day

On Tuesday, November 30th, to culminate our "night" theme, we will be having a pajama day. Children are welcome to wear their pajamas to school, and are asked to bring a small stuffed animal too. We will be doing a variety of French language activities with our stuffies.

Show and Tell

This month, we are beginning daily show and tell. We will have two themes for this month: "Fall / l'automne" and "All about me". Each child has been assigned one day a week on which they can bring one item to share. (In other words, your child will have Show and Tell 4 times each month.) Please see the Show and Tell section on the class website to find your child's day and more information about this month's theme.  Please have them bring the item in an opaque bag, so that we can use our French oral language skills to ask questions in French in order to guess what the item is.

If you have not yet sent in a family photo, please do as soon as possible! Merci!
