June News

It's hard to believe we are in our last month of kindergarten!
Themes

This month, we will be learning beach and ocean vocabulary. We will go on a field trip to Island View Beach on the morning of June 14th with Mme Lepiq/Mme Macrae and Mme Matta's classes. A permission form was sent home today.

Throughout the month, we will continue to review letter sounds and work on improving our best guess writing. I have been circulating during their writing time and helping them "break apart" words into syllables to help facilitate hearing/writing more sounds in each word. I am encouraging the children to become more independent and to write the sounds they hear without constant adult support. I will be posting more of the children's writing samples on Freshgrade, so be sure to check them out! As you may have heard, Freshgrade will no longer be available after this year. If you wish to download any photos from your child's portfolio, please do so before September, as you will no longer have access to them after the summer.

In math, we are learning about Canadian coins, and are continuing to "break apart" numbers to 10. We will also be reviewing sets to 10, measurement, and shapes.

Summer Birthdays

If your child has a birthday in the summer, we will be making them a card and celebrating it during the month of June. This way, no one is left out!

Play center mixers

For the month of June, once or twice a week, the three French Immersion Kindergarten classes will do "play mixers" for our afternoon play centre time. The teachers will divide each class into 3 groups. Each teacher will then take 1/3 of each class to their classroom to play. The groups will switch each week. This will allow the children to meet and play with some of the other kindergarten children that may be in their grade one class, as well as provide the children the opportunity to get used to being in a different classroom with a different teacher.

Class Lists for Grade One

Later in the month, teachers will begin to meet to start the long process of creating class lists for next year. There are many things teachers consider when making the lists, and one of these is friendships. Over the next week, I will be pulling students aside to ask the names of some of the children that they would like to have in their grade one class next year. I will ask the students to give me the names of 4-5+ children that they would like to have in their class. This does not mean that all these children will be in their class next year, but it helps me to ensure that they will have at least one of their friends with them. I will ask students not to talk to their peers about who they have included/excluded on their list, as this can cause hurt feelings. You may wish to discuss this topic with your child.
