January 2022 News     Winter Solstice 2020: When Is the First Day of Winter? What Is the Winter Solstice? | The Old Farmer's Almanac

Bonne année! Thank you so much for the thoughtful Christmas presents and cards! They were very much appreciated. I hope that you all had a healthy and restful holiday with your family and friends, even if it wasn't how you normally celebrate the season.

Covid continues to shake things up and keep us on our toes. Throw in the snow this past week, and it all contributes to a very different start to 2022!  We will do our best to keep you up to date on the happenings with Omicron and how it is affecting our school, but if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to myself or our admin team.

January Themes

For the month of January, we will be learning about Winter, and places that are cold in Canada- specifically, the Arctic and Nunavut.  We will be learning about polar bears and inukshuks, and characteristics of winter. We have been working on our letter sounds, and will be starting to do "best guess spelling/ Kindergarten spelling" to write words in our journals. We will also start a more formal practice of printing letters of the alphabet. Please continue to practice proper letter formation and pencil grip with your child. In math, we will continue to work on number recognition and number concepts, recognizing dot formations (ex. on dice). Letter and sound recognition will also continue to be ongoing themes. The children will also begin another French play with Mme Macintosh. They will be reading the play several times, acting it out, as well as doing a variety of other activities to continue to improve their French oral language. This a very exciting term for me as a teacher, as now until March is when we see a huge growth in the children's language and overall skills.

Baby Photos

Thank you to those who have sent in a baby photo already. If you have not, please send one in when possible. We will be making a class book with the photos once they are all in to look at how the children have changed over time. (This is another Social Studies learning outcome). Plus, the children really love looking at photos of themselves!

Kindergarten Registration

K registration (for September 2022) is happening early this year, so if you have a child or know other children that will be starting Kindergarten in the Fall, please spread the word! French Immersion K registration starts next week. For more information, please see the school or district websites.

Happy January! Stay healthy!!
